Job description
Position: Executive Director Organization: Congregation Beth Ha Tephila Location: Asheville, NC Congregation Beth Ha Tephila is a thriving, warm, and deeply inclusive synagogue community located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. With more than 300 families and growing, the congregation is entering an exciting period of continued growth and opportunity. The Executive Director serves as the senior operational leader of the congregation, partnering closely with clergy and lay leadership to ensure the synagogue's ongoing vitality, financial health, and strategic growth. This role requires a strategic thinker and self-directed leader who can take full ownership of synagogue operations while collaborating effectively within a highly engaged community. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all major functional areas of the organization, including fiscal management, operations, program support, community relations, and board relations. The position supervises a staff of three and plays a central role in aligning day-to-day operations with the congregation’s long-term vision. Core Responsibilities: Fiscal & Financial Management: - Oversee the synagogue’s financial operations, budgeting, and general ledger management - Provide big-picture financial oversight and ensure sound fiscal stewardship - Work with leadership to support financial planning and sustainability - Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial best practices Operations & Administration: - Manage daily operational functions of the congregation - Oversee administrative systems and workflow processes - Support program logistics and facility operations - Ensure smooth coordination across all program areas Leadership & Staff Supervision: - Supervise and support a staff of three - Foster a collaborative, accountable, and mission-aligned work environment - Work closely with clergy and lay leaders to advance strategic goals Board & Community Relations: - Partner with synagogue leadership and board members - Serve as a key liaison between professional staff and volunteer leadership - Support community engagement initiatives and congregational growth Qualifications: - Previous experience directing or leading staff in a nonprofit organization required - Strong big-picture financial knowledge, including understanding of general ledger (GL) processes - Ability to take ownership and operate as a self-directed, strategic leader - Strong collaboration skills combined with the ability to work independently - Experience with QuickBooks and ShulCloud preferred - Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends This is an exceptional opportunity for a mission-driven leader who is excited to contribute to a vibrant and welcoming Jewish community in one of the most beautiful regions of the country.
