FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Mathematics at The College of Staten Island (CSI) of The City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics with an anticipated starting date of Fall 2027.

This position is aimed at expanding the college's footprint in emerging technologies. We seek candidates whose research and teaching expertise focus on the mathematics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science. A primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to play a leading role in designing and developing a new Artificial Intelligence curriculum—including a certificate, minor, and major—in collaboration with faculty across disciplines.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in research, deliver high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and actively contribute to departmental, college, and university service. Faculty may also have the opportunity to be appointed to the doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center, where they can teach and mentor PhD students. We welcome applicants from both applied and pure mathematical backgrounds (such as logic or graph theory) whose work intersects with AI. However, regardless of their specific mathematical sub-discipline, the successful candidate must demonstrate the capacity and computational background to develop and teach core undergraduate courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The faculty member will also share responsibility for committee and department assignments, including administrative, supervisory, and other functions as needed.

The College of Staten Island(CSI) is a senior college of The City University of New York (CUNY) organized around two academic divisions and two schools with over many professional areas. The college is situated on a 204-acre tree-lined spacious site with recently built student dormitories and is currently engaging in capital expansion.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Mathematics or an adjacent field is required. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications: Postdoctoral or equivalent experience is strongly preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a robust research record in the mathematical foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to: optimization, computational statistics, deep learning theory, automated reasoning, symbolic AI, AI-assisted mathematics (e.g., formal verification, interactive theorem proving), or the intersection of graph theory and machine learning.

Candidates must be able to develop and teach cutting-edge courses in these areas and demonstrate a strong interest in program development and curriculum design. Candidates should demonstrate the potential for securing external funding and a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse, multicultural campus environment.
