Job description
UJA-Federation supports hundreds of nonprofits, large and small, to meet the needs of Jewish communities in New York, Israel, and around the world. At the center of this ecosystem are UJA’s 63 core partner agencies serving communities and individuals across the five boroughs, Westchester, and Long Island. The Network Department works to foster thriving institutions positioned to serve today’s populations and tomorrow’s emerging needs. Network provides funding and non-financial resources such as expert consultants, supportive professional networks, and cohort learning to ensure the organizational health and efficacy of our closest partners.
The Network Department is one leg of UJA-Federation’s planning division, Community Planning and External Relations (CPER). With a special focus on UJA’s 60+ core partner agencies, the department provides general operating support, offers an array of supports to ensure healthy organizations, and works collaboratively with our closest partners and CPER colleagues to think expansively about how to sustain excellent organizations and meet the ongoing needs of an ever-evolving community.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of financial analysis, data infrastructure, and agency partnership. The Financial Analyst supports a function built on two inseparable responsibilities: knowing what is happening financially across UJA’s core partner network and acting on that knowledge in ways that strengthen the organizations we serve. The Analyst plays a central role in building the data systems, analytical tools, and direct agency relationships that make this possible.
The Analyst also supports UJA’s capacity-building work with core partners, helps prepare the agency analysis that informs where support is directed, and supports data analysis.
Major Responsibilities:
- Manage annual collection of financial data across UJA’s grantee portfolio (criteria for those included in the collection to be developed). Collected information includes audited statements, 990s, and operating budgets. Manage submission and a centralized document repository.
- Analyze financial health across the portfolio using a structured scorecard framework; flag emerging concerns for Director review and escalation.
- Conduct agency-level financial reviews and develop cohort or sector-wide summaries, as needed.
- Identify governance risk indicators through analysis of board structure, composition, and policy data.
- Support the rollout and ongoing maintenance of a tiered oversight framework across core partners, strategic partners, and other UJA-funded organizations.
- Support the operational infrastructure of UJA’s capacity-building work with core partners — request intake, engagement records, budget tracking, consultant deliverables, and documentation.
- Use portfolio financial and governance data to surface capacity needs and candidate agencies for support; prepare the agency background materials that allow the Director and outside experts to scope engagements quickly.
- Track capacity-building engagements through completion, compiling outcome data for reporting to Network leadership.
- Maintain regular, direct contact with agency finance and executive staff — through 1:1 conversations and site visits — to deepen qualitative understanding of agency financial condition beyond what the numbers alone convey.
- Accompany lay leaders on site visits as a financial resource, helping translate agency financial health into accessible context for committee members.
- Help build dashboards and agency profiles serving multiple internal audiences; partner with Operations to improve data collection systems, scorecard frameworks, and reporting.
- Support grantmaking analytics including GOS modeling, public funding tracking, and cross-CPER collaboration; perform ad hoc analyses and support the Agency Oversight Committee.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
- 3–5 years of relevant financial analysis experience.
- Ability to read and interpret nonprofit financial statements (audited financials, Form 990) — prior experience strongly preferred.
- Excel proficiency (pivot tables, etc.); familiarity with GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting.
- Experience with or interest in data visualization tools and AI-assisted data extraction and workflow automation.
- Excellent collaboration skills – both as a project lead and as a contributor.
- Strong communicator who can translate complex financials for non-financial audiences, including lay leadership and agency staff.
- Relationship-oriented, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment.
- Genuine interest in UJA’s mission and the health of the Jewish communal sector.
