Job description
Position Summary:
The School of Art + Design in NJIT's Hillier College of Architecture and Design invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Professor of Practice in Art (renewable for up to three years). We seek an accomplished practicing artist and effective educator who can make artistic practice accessible, rigorous, and relevant to students across a polytechnic research university. The position is funded through Arts@NJIT, an alumni-supported initiative that includes ample support for programs and art materials and equipment.
The search is intentionally open with respect to medium and mode of practice. We welcome art generalists and interdisciplinary artist-educators whose work may engage drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, installation, performance, socially engaged or public practice, sound and time-based work, digital or computational media, creative coding, AI-enabled or AI-critical practice, extended reality, fabrication, or hybrid forms. Candidates are not expected to work in every area, and the search does not privilege emerging technology over traditional studio practice.
The successful candidate will develop and teach art courses for students from all NJIT majors, including courses proposed for inclusion in the university General Education Requirements; help shape and implement Arts@NJIT, a campus-wide initiative supported by a generous alumni gift; and serve as a visible advocate, resource, and connector for art across the university. Arts@NJIT was established to expand access to art courses in varied media and to support visiting artists, exhibitions, events, and other curricular and co-curricular programming accessible in particular to undergraduate engineering students.
The appointment is based in the School of Art + Design and offers opportunities to collaborate across NJIT. The successful candidate will have access to appropriate instructional resources and, subject to training, scheduling, and safety requirements, may use NJIT Makerspace facilities and other relevant university laboratories and shops.
Essential Functions
Develop and teach accessible undergraduate art courses for students with varied majors and levels of prior art experience, including courses intended for General Education approval and interdisciplinary electives.
Combine making with appropriate critical, historical, cultural, ethical, and/or theoretical context so that courses serve the learning goals of a university-wide audience.
Design course content in one or more areas aligned with the candidate's expertise; revise curricula in response to student learning, contemporary practice, and university needs.
Collaborate with School faculty and university partners on course development, curricular approval, learning outcomes, assessment, and continuous improvement.
Help develop and implement Arts@NJIT, including annual planning, outreach, program assessment, and responsible stewardship of initiative resources.
Organize or coordinate a balanced program of exhibitions, installations, workshops, visiting artists, talks, critiques, screenings, performances, public projects, and/or student showcases.
Build productive partnerships across NJIT colleges and units, including the Makerspace, library, student organizations, Student Affairs, and other academic and cultural programs, as well as with appropriate Newark and regional arts organizations.
Advocate for artistic practice and arts learning across campus by communicating opportunities, engaging faculty and students, and demonstrating meaningful connections among art, technology, science, engineering, society, and public life.
Mentor students and foster inclusive, accessible, and safe learning environments in studios, classrooms, shops, and public programs.
Maintain an active professional creative practice and appropriate engagement with the contemporary art field.
Participate in School, College, University, community, and professional service appropriate to the appointment.
Teaching Assignment and Allocation of Duties
The expected teaching assignment is 3 classes (9 contact hours) per semester. The appointment includes the ability for further course release for Arts@NJIT programming, campus outreach, and initiative administration. Final assignments are made under School procedures and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Prerequisite Qualifications
An MFA or other terminal degree in studio art, new media art, interdisciplinary art, or a related field; or equivalent professional stature and achievement appropriate to appointment as a Professor of Practice.
A substantial, current professional creative practice demonstrated through exhibitions, commissions, performances, screenings, publications, public projects, peer-reviewed work, recognized professional production, or comparable accomplishments.
Demonstrated teaching, mentoring, workshop, museum/public education, or other educational experience, with evidence of an ability to translate professional practice into effective learning for students who may have no prior art training.
Evidence of effective collaboration, communication, organization, and follow-through in projects involving multiple participants or partners.
Demonstrated ability to support inclusive learning and to work responsibly and safely with the media, tools, and environments used in the candidate's teaching and practice.
Preferred Qualifications
College-level teaching experience, especially with non-majors, beginning students, interdisciplinary cohorts, or General Education courses.
Experience developing new courses, navigating curricular approval, assessing learning outcomes, or contributing to a university-wide curriculum.
Experience with campus or community arts programming, curatorial work, visiting-artist programs, public art, exhibitions, performances, screenings, or arts advocacy.
A practice that creates credible connections among art and one or more fields such as technology, engineering, science, humanities, social inquiry, entrepreneurship, or community engagement.
Experience with makerspaces, digital fabrication, creative technology, shared studios, or collaborative workshops; this is not required for candidates whose strengths are in traditional or nontechnical practices.
Experience building partnerships with cultural organizations, community groups, donors, or external creative professionals.
Ability to teach across more than one method, medium, or conceptual area while maintaining depth in the candidate's primary practice.
