Job description
Position: Head of School, Boys & Girls Elementary
Organization: Yeshiva Sha'arei Zion
Location: Queens, NY
About the Organization:
Yeshiva Sha'arei Zion (YSZ) www.yszqueens.org is the only Chareidi Sephardic Yeshiva in Queens, affiliated with the Beth Gavriel Bukharian Jewish Center in Forest Hills, NY. The school serves separate boys' and girls' divisions with a dual curriculum of Judaic and General Studies.
Overview:
YSZ seeks its first Head of School, a newly created role that will serve as the Boys and Girls Elementary Division chief executive and educational leader. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, he will have all faculty and staff reporting through them, with full responsibility for the school's educational program, finances, operations, people, and community presence.
This is a rare chance to shape the leadership structure of a mission-driven yeshiva from the ground up: to build systems, set standards, and strengthen the school's ruach while honoring its Chareidi Sephardic identity.
Qualifications:
- Deep personal alignment with Chareidi values and a strong understanding of and respect for Sephardic tradition, minhagim, and community.
- At least 7 to 10 years of leadership experience in a Yeshiva or Jewish day school, with senior administrative or principal-level responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing both Judaic and General Studies, ideally across separate boys' and girls' divisions.
- Hands-on financial management: budgeting, P&L ownership, and tuition and tuition-assistance processes.
- Working knowledge of NYS and NYC government-funded programs for nonpublic schools (UPK, STEM, Title programs, school lunch, busing, mandated services) and the compliance they require.
- Track record hiring, managing, and developing faculty and staff, including difficult personnel decisions.
- Experience overseeing school operations, HR, and facilities.
- Skill in community relations, fundraising events, and representing an institution publicly.
- Master's degree in Education; or a related field preferred; Semicha or equivalent Torah scholarship valued.
- Strong written and verbal communication in English and Hebrew.
Personal Attributes
- A builder who is energized by creating structure and systems for a school's first professional leadership role.
- A warm, visible presence who earns the trust of parents, students, Rabbis, and staff.
- Firm and fair: comfortable holding high standards for students and staff alike.
- Operationally detail-oriented without losing sight of the school's mission and ruach.
- Collaborative with the Board, transparent in reporting, and comfortable with accountability.
- Personal integrity and middos that model the values the school seeks to instill.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day operations: busing, kitchen and food service, security, IT, copying and supplies, and building maintenance.
- Ensure a safe, well-run, and compliant facility.
- Put systems and processes in place where none exist today.
Admissions, Advancement and Community
- Serve as the face of the school to parents, the Bukharian and broader Sephardic community, donors, and government partners.
- Lead admissions and enrollment, from outreach through acceptance.
- Oversee marketing and PR and lead the annual dinner in partnership with the Board.
- Strengthen the partnership between parents, teachers, and administration that is central to the school's mission.
Educational Leadership
- Oversee curriculum, instruction, and standards for both Judaic and General Studies across the boys' and girls' divisions.
- Ensure the dual curriculum reflects the school's Chareidi Sephardic hashkafa while meeting NYS educational requirements.
- Lead and grow the school's programming and ruach, building a joyful, Torah-centered school culture.
- Set and uphold student conduct and discipline policies, applied consistently and with care.
- Guide students and families through high school placement.
People and Staff Leadership
- Serve as the hiring and firing authority for all faculty and staff.
- Supervise, evaluate, and support the professional growth of division heads, teachers, and administrative staff.
- Oversee HR administration, including payroll, benefits, unemployment, pension, and compliance with employment law.
Finance and Government Funding
- Develop and manage the annual budget and P&L in partnership with the Board.
- Own all grant and government-funded programs, including STEM, UPK, the free lunch program, busing, mandated services, and discretionary funding.
- Ensure accurate reporting, compliance, and maximum capture of available funding.
- Build and run a clear, consistent process for tuition collection and tuition assistance.
Board Partnership
- Report regularly to the Board on academics, finances, enrollment, and operations.
- Work with the Board on strategic planning and long-term priorities.
Salary:
$200,000 - $225,000
Note:
This is a permanent, on-site position.
