Job description

About You
You are a highly strategic, data-driven, detail-oriented, and exceptionally organized accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. You anticipate needs, identify risks, and drive initiatives forward with minimal guidance. You bring financial discipline and clarity to operational execution and ensure the integrity of financial data across the organization.

You communicate effectively with cross-functional peers, auditors, and external stakeholders, and you know how to prioritize what truly warrants leadership attention. You actively use AI tools in your day-to-day work and are always looking for ways to automate and streamline accounting processes. You are excited to join Flourish at a pivotal stage, and are motivated by the prospect of building a scalable accounting function.

About the Role
Flourish is transitioning to a standalone, PE-backed organization. This is a hands-on, execution-focused Controller role to lead accounting operations and ensure financial integrity during a critical stage of growth and product evolution.

As the Controller, you will report directly to the CFO and oversee accounting, financial reporting, broker-dealer regulatory reporting, audit, tax, and compliance, while strengthening financial operations and supporting scalable growth. You’ll manage a Staff Accountant and work closely with the Financial Planning and Analysis Manager, who also reports to the CFO.

Principal Responsibilities
Lead comprehensive accounting operations, including close, reporting, controls, and GAAP financial statement preparation
Own regulatory financial reporting for Flourish Financial LLC (our FINRA-member broker-dealer) and other regulated entities, including net capital computations, FOCUS filings, annual audited financial statements, and other SEC/FINRA requirements, either directly as FINOP or by managing outsourced FINOP and compliance partners
Manage audit readiness and the external auditor relationship
Oversee implementation of new accounting standards
Own KPI integrity of financial reporting and underlying accounting data
Manage cash flow visibility and working capital reporting
Manage the third-party tax service provider and all compliance filings across jurisdictions
Partner with the Financial Planning and Analysis Manager to ensure budget, forecasts, and management reporting tie to the accounting records, and with the CEO, CRO, and leadership on reporting alignment
Identify, quantify, and communicate business risks and opportunities, considering financial, compliance, and operational risk
Lead projects with accounting and reporting requirements from planning through implementation
Support carve-out efforts, TSA exit, and standalone readiness
Drive operational efficiency by building scalable accounting infrastructure and tooling as needed (coordinating with third-party implementation firms) and automating and streamlining the close, reconciliations, reporting, and other workflows
Hire, lead, and develop a Staff Accountant, and scale the accounting team as the business grows

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, and a professional accounting qualification
FINRA Series 27 (FINOP) license, or direct experience in a business that owns a broker-dealer (or similarly regulated entity), including working with outsourced partners (e.g., FINOP, compliance) to meet regulatory requirements
10+ years of accounting experience in a financial services or fintech environment strongly preferred
3+ years of management experience motivating and directing a team of professional staff, including remote teams
Advanced knowledge of SEC regulations and GAAP, with experience preparing and reviewing external financial statements (including FOCUS or XBRL reporting)
Due to the nature of this position, as part of the background check process, candidates must be able to pass a fingerprint background check to qualify as a fingerprinted person under FINRA. For roles requiring registration, additional regulatory screenings may apply, including a review of Form U5 disclosures and other relevant licensing information.

Preferred Qualifications
Master of Accounting degree and CPA
Experience working in a PE environment
Demonstrated use of AI tools (e.g., LLMs and AI-enabled ERP, close and reconciliation tools) to automate processes and improve efficiency
Independent and self-motivated, yet collaborative
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and multitask; proactive, detail-oriented, and results-oriented
Excellent critical thinking skills, using logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions
Ability to make accurate, independent decisions based on data
Confident and positive executive presence and interpersonal skills
Ability to understand the financial impact of decisions and balance them with business partner satisfaction
