Job description

The Opportunity

The Director of Operations will take ownership of a wide portfolio of day-to-day functions, from facilities and staff to finances, technology, and building systems. We are looking for a seasoned leader who can work granularly and think big picture; someone who is energized by order and making things work; a juggler who can create processes and procedures for efficiency and maximum results; and a strong communicator across staff, clergy, trustees, members, and volunteers.

What You'll Do

Operations and Systems

Lead the synagogue's daily operations, administrative functions, and office staff.
Build and document systems and workflows that improve efficiency and communication.
Coordinate operational support for worship services, holidays, lifecycle events, programs, facility rentals, and Board activities.

People

Supervise bookkeeper, maintenance, communications and administrative staff, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management.
Serve as a trusted operational partner to clergy, lay leadership, committees, and volunteers.

Facilities and Safety

Oversee the building: maintenance, vendors, capital projects, and sustainability initiatives.
Manage security, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance in coordination with relevant partners and agencies.

Finance and Administration

Oversee budgeting, purchasing, contracts, and financial reporting in partnership with the Vice President of Finance and the Budget Committee.
Negotiate and manage vendor relationships and service agreements.
Enhance revenue streams unrelated to development and membership.

Technology

Oversee synagogue technology, audiovisual systems, and IT vendors.
Supervise digital communications and social media.

What We're Looking For

Required

7+ years of operations, facilities, or nonprofit management experience, including direct supervision of staff.
Demonstrated success managing budgets, vendors, and physical space.
Strong project management skills.
Excellent organizational and communication skills, with sound judgment.
Comfort partnering with other directors, volunteers, and lay leadership.
Solid technology skills and a genuine ability to improve organizational systems.

Preferred

Experience in a synagogue, church, school, or other mission-driven nonprofit.
Familiarity with Jewish life, the Jewish calendar, and synagogue operations.
Experience with membership or CRM databases, facilities management software, and AV systems.
