Position Summary
Newfi Lending is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and hands-on Assistant Controller to support our Finance team's accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and mortgage banking activities.
This position will play a critical role in managing day-to-day accounting functions, overseeing the monthly close process, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting audit readiness, and ensuring the integrity of mortgage-specific accounting activities.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical accounting knowledge, preferably within mortgage banking, wholesale or correspondent lending, Non-QM, or financial services. This individual should be equally comfortable reviewing complex reconciliations, resolving accounting discrepancies, improving processes, and supporting the development of accounting team members.
Working closely with Finance leadership, the Assistant Controller will collaborate with Capital Markets, Secondary Marketing, Treasury, Operations, and other business partners to strengthen financial reporting, enhance operational efficiency, and support Newfi's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
Manage daily accounting activities, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Coordinate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
Prepare and review financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, cash flow schedules, and supporting financial documentation.
Review general ledger activity, identify discrepancies, and ensure accurate classification of financial transactions.
Monitor accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and close timelines.
Assist Finance leadership with financial reporting packages, variance analysis, and special accounting projects.
Mortgage Banking Accounting & Reconciliations
Oversee and support mortgage-specific accounting activities involving loan funding, loan sales, gain-on-sale recognition, investor settlements, and servicing-related transactions.
Review warehouse line reconciliations, including funding activity, paydowns, interest, fees, outstanding balances, and investor proceeds.
Ensure accurate reconciliation of loan-level transactions between mortgage systems, warehouse facilities, banking records, and the general ledger.
Investigate and resolve discrepancies related to loan funding, investor remittances, cash activity, and mortgage accounting transactions.
Collaborate with Treasury, Capital Markets, Secondary Marketing, and Operations to ensure timely and accurate recording of financial activity.
Support the accounting and reconciliation requirements associated with Non-QM, DSCR, Jumbo, and other mortgage lending products.
Internal Controls, Audit & Compliance
Assist in maintaining and strengthening accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and financial documentation.
Prepare audit schedules, supporting workpapers, account reconciliations, and documentation for internal and external audits.
Assist with investor reviews, warehouse lender reporting requirements, and regulatory financial examinations.
Ensure accounting transactions and financial reporting comply with GAAP, company policies, and applicable mortgage banking requirements.
Identify control gaps, accounting risks, and opportunities to improve financial processes.
Support the implementation of standardized procedures that strengthen audit readiness and operational consistency.
Financial Analysis & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Prepare and support financial analysis, budget-to-actual comparisons, expense reporting, profitability analysis, and variance explanations.
Assist with financial reporting tools and dashboards that provide meaningful visibility into business performance.
Collaborate with FP&A and Finance leadership to support forecasting, budgeting, and operational financial reporting.
Work with internal departments to investigate accounting issues, improve reporting accuracy, and resolve financial discrepancies.
Support special projects involving accounting systems, process automation, reporting enhancements, and business initiatives.
Team Leadership & Process Improvement
Provide guidance, training, and day-to-day support to accounting team members.
Review accounting workpapers, reconciliations, and journal entries to ensure accuracy, completeness, and
adherence to established procedures.
Assist in establishing priorities, monitoring deadlines, and maintaining accountability across accounting functions.
Identify opportunities to streamline processes, reduce manual tasks, and improve accounting workflows.
Evaluate and implement technology, including AI-enabled accounting tools and automation solutions, to enhance reconciliations, reporting, financial analysis, and operational efficiency.
Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented environment that promotes continuous improvement and professional development.
