Job description
Congregation B'nai Jeshurun (BJ), an Upper West Side community of nearly 2,000 member households founded in 1825, is hiring a Director of Communications. You'll lead BJ's marketing and communications day to day, deciding what BJ says, how, when and to whom, and you'll write in the voice of its clergy and senior leadership. You'll manage a team of three, report to Executive Director Steven Melzer, and work closely with Rosh Kehillah and Senior Rabbi Felicia Sol.
Responsibilities:
• Build and lead the communications strategy and calendar across programs, the High Holy Days, membership and fundraising
• Write and edit remarks, announcements and statements, including on sensitive or high-visibility topics
• Manage the Associate Director of Communications, the Social Media & Communications Manager and a part-time designer, plus freelancers and vendors
• Own the communications budget, vendor contracts and production calendar
• Oversee the website, email marketing, social channels and digital storytelling, and pilot podcasts and video
• Keep registration, payment and donation forms working cleanly with backend systems
• Use analytics to expand reach and deepen engagement
Qualifications:
• 6+ years in communications, marketing, public affairs or digital strategy, including 3+ years managing a team or function
• Exceptional writing and editing for varied audiences
• Hands-on with WordPress, Mailchimp, social channels and analytics; Salesforce, Airtable, Blackthorn and Cvent a plus
• Strong judgment and steadiness in sensitive moments
• Familiarity with Jewish communal life and synagogue culture preferred
Salary: $130,000–$150,000
Benefits:
Highly subsidized medical, dental and vision insurance, disability coverage, a 403(b), generous vacation and sick leave, and more than 20 paid national and Jewish holidays.
**Schedule:** Full-time, 4–5 days a week on site, with occasional evening, weekend and holiday work.
To Apply:
Submit your resume and a cover letter of 150 words or fewer on what draws you to BJ, and why this role, now. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline of November 6, 2026.
