Job description

Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Healthcare

Lakewood, NJ | On-Site (Hybrid Flexibility)
$200,000–$250,000

Overview

A growing, multi-location healthcare organization is seeking a sharp, highly analytical, and hands-on CFO to take ownership of its financial operations and serve as a strategic partner to leadership.

This is not a traditional CFO role focused on reporting numbers and overseeing accounting. We’re looking for someone who can think independently, challenge assumptions, investigate complex financial questions, and uncover opportunities that others might overlook.

The right person won’t simply accept an accountant’s recommendation at face value. They’ll dig into the details, research competing opinions, engage directly with experienced CPAs and financial advisors, and confidently challenge their conclusions when warranted.

Whether it’s evaluating a complex tax strategy, understanding why profit margins changed, or identifying opportunities to improve financial performance, this person will take the initiative to get answers, make informed recommendations, and drive results.

This is a highly involved leadership role for someone who combines strong financial expertise, intellectual curiosity, business judgment, and a genuine sense of ownership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full ownership of financial operations, reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and overall financial performance

  • Independently research complex financial and tax-related questions, evaluate conflicting professional opinions, and develop well-supported recommendations

  • Engage directly with outside CPAs, tax advisors, and other financial experts, asking the right questions and challenging assumptions when necessary

  • Analyze profitability, identify trends, investigate financial discrepancies, and explain what’s driving changes in margins

  • Identify creative opportunities to reduce expenses, improve profitability, and strengthen the company’s financial position

  • Develop financial projections and translate financial data into actionable business decisions

  • Oversee billing, collections, and revenue cycle performance, ensuring strong accountability and follow-through

  • Monitor cash flow, spending, and financial obligations

  • Establish budgets and financial controls across multiple locations and departments

  • Strengthen financial reporting, expense management, and internal processes

  • Oversee bookkeeping and coordinate tax planning and related financial matters

  • Collaborate with operations and HR leadership to improve staffing costs, operational efficiency, and overall financial performance

  • Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to important strategic decisions

Ideal Candidate

  • Strong financial leadership experience as a CFO, Controller, VP of Finance, or similar senior-level role

  • Exceptional analytical ability, independent thinking, and strong financial judgment

  • Deep understanding of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and tax-related matters

  • Ability to confidently engage with senior CPAs and financial professionals, evaluate their recommendations, and challenge conclusions through informed analysis

  • Proven track record of identifying financial opportunities and driving measurable improvements in profitability

  • Highly resourceful, intellectually curious, and willing to investigate issues until they fully understand them

  • Strong business acumen and ability to connect financial decisions to operational outcomes

  • Healthcare experience strongly preferred, particularly in insurance-based reimbursement environments

  • Experience with ABA or multi-location healthcare services is a plus

  • Hands-on, proactive leader who takes ownership rather than waiting for direction

  • Collaborative, approachable, and comfortable working closely with ownership and department leaders

  • Experience building stronger financial systems, controls, and processes

We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just know finance—they know how to think, question, investigate, and use their expertise to make the business stronger.
