Job description
Congregation Micah is a vibrant, inclusive, and innovative Reform Jewish community serving approximately 500 families in the Nashville area. We believe Jewish life should be joyful, spiritually meaningful, and intellectually engaging, with congregants deeply connected to one another. We honor Jewish tradition while continually seeking creative ways to bring Jewish wisdom, worship, music, and community to life. We believe music is at the heart of Jewish life and community. It is one of the most powerful ways we pray, teach, comfort, celebrate, remember, and connect with one another. We are seeking a gifted musician, vocalist, teacher, collaborator, and relationship-builder who can inspire and engage people of all ages through worship, learning, and community connection. Congregation Micah recognizes that gifted Jewish musical leadership can emerge through multiple paths. We enthusiastically welcome applications from ordained Cantors as well as accomplished Cantorial Soloists and Jewish music professionals. We are interested in finding the right person, not a particular title, and responsibilities may be tailored to reflect the candidate's training, experience, strengths, and credentials. If you are excited by the opportunity to enrich Jewish life through music, worship, learning, and community-building, we encourage you to apply. THE ROLE The Cantor/Cantorial Soloist will be a highly visible member of Micah's leadership team, working closely with the Rabbis, Executive Director, Education Director, professional staff, lay leaders, musicians, and volunteers. This person will help shape Micah's musical vision and spiritual life, both within and beyond the sanctuary. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable leading a room of hundreds in song, teaching a teenager one-on-one, collaborating with musicians, supporting a family during a significant life moment, and imagining new ways music can deepen Jewish life. MUSICAL LEADERSHIP & VISION • Help shape and lead Micah's musical vision, both in worship and throughout congregational life. • Direct, rehearse, and perform with choirs, ensembles, bands, and other musical groups as appropriate. • Recruit, inspire, and support volunteer and professional musicians. • Collaborate with accompanists, guest artists, and other musical partners. • Introduce and teach new music while honoring the traditions and melodies that are meaningful to our community. • Inspire congregational participation through music, helping create moments of prayer, connection, and celebration that are shared with the community, not simply performed for it. • Proficiency in one or more musical instruments is preferred. WORSHIP & SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP • Lead worship with the Rabbis for Shabbat, festivals, High Holy Days, and other congregational services; assume additional officiation responsibilities consistent with training, credentials, and role. • Bring musical excellence, spiritual depth, warmth, and creativity to worship, helping create experiences that are meaningful, engaging, and accessible. • Introduce new music while honoring the traditions, melodies, and practices that are meaningful to our community. • Collaborate with the Rabbis to design and lead worship experiences that incorporate music, storytelling, themes, and other creative elements. • Lead prayer, chant, and congregational singing with strong knowledge of Jewish liturgy and Hebrew. B'NAI MITZVAH & JEWISH LEARNING • Play a leadership role in Micah's B'nai Mitzvah preparation program, helping students and families experience Jewish growth, confidence, and connection. Responsibilities may include student coaching, family engagement, program coordination, and broader program leadership based on the candidate's experience and strengths. • Help make B'nai Mitzvah preparation a journey of Jewish growth, learning, confidence, and connection, not simply preparation for a ceremony. • Partner with the Education Director to create engaging music, worship, and Jewish learning experiences for children, teens, families, and the broader congregation. • Lead Tot Shabbat and other music-focused experiences for children and families, including programs at Micah Children's Academy. PASTORAL, LIFECYCLE & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT • Build meaningful relationships with congregants across generations and stages of life. • Participate in lifecycle events including B'nai Mitzvah, weddings, funerals, shivah minyanim, unveilings, and other significant moments. • Be present for congregants during moments of joy, loss, celebration, and transition, supporting pastoral and congregational care efforts in partnership with the Rabbis as appropriate. • Participate in Jewish community collaborations, interfaith services, and events in the broader Nashville community. • Contribute to membership engagement, community-building, and the daily life of Congregation Micah. COLLABORATION, TECHNOLOGY & ADMINISTRATION • Collaborate with the Rabbis, staff, and volunteers to plan and deliver meaningful worship, programs, and congregational life. • Coordinate the technical and production elements that support worship and other congregational experiences, in partnership with the Rabbis. staff, volunteers, and technical support providers. • Help ensure worship services, rehearsals, B'nai Mitzvah preparation, programs, and communications are thoughtfully planned and well organized. • Manage multiple responsibilities with reliability, organization, flexibility, attention to detail, and timely follow-through. • Participate actively in staff and leadership meetings, congregational planning, and budget stewardship. • Maintain a consistent on-site presence, recognizing the unique rhythm of congregational life, including evenings and weekends. WHY MICAH? We are seeking more than an accomplished musician. We are seeking someone who can help people sing when they are joyful and find words when they are not, someone who can stand before hundreds of people and create a sense of intimacy, and who can sit with one grieving congregant and offer that same gift of presence. At Micah, tradition and innovation are not opposites. We strive to honor what has been handed down while remaining open to what has yet to be imagined. Most of all, we are looking for someone who wants to build something with us: a musical and spiritual life that is joyful, creative, deeply Jewish, and deeply human. POSITION DETAILS & APPLICATION This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. Salary will be determined based on the candidate’s training, experience, and whether they join Micah as a Cantor or Cantorial Soloist. To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter, and any relevant recordings of worship leadership and musical performance to post-6ad64f7148e0fb4ce91040b9-1792432670@apply.jewishstaffing.com.
