Job description
THE ROLE
The Director of Information Technology leads technology strategy, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and IT operations across the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), ensuring staff have the secure, reliable, and responsive technology they need to advance the organization's mission. The Director leads a team of four IT professionals providing Help Desk support to more than 300 end users across a largely remote workforce and maintaining technology infrastructure across 13 summer camps and two large office locations.
The Director is accountable for infrastructure, end-user computing, service delivery, cybersecurity operations, cloud services, and technology vendors. The Director sustains high service levels, reduces risk, optimizes technology investments, and continuously improves IT operations through effective planning, governance, and execution. Working closely with staff and leaders across departments, the Director ensures technology solutions are practical, accessible, secure, and aligned with organizational needs. As leader of the IT team, the Director provides clear direction, mentorship, and accountability while building a culture of trust, collaboration, and shared ownership.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
IT STRATEGY, PLANNING & RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
• Set and execute the organization's IT strategy, aligning technology priorities, investments, and resources with organizational needs, security, operational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.
• Drive technology improvements and modernization, evaluating emerging technologies, including AI, and identifying opportunities to strengthen systems, services, and how staff work.
• Ensure effective IT governance and financial stewardship, establishing technology standards, multi-year plans, budgets, and performance measures while managing procurement, vendor relationships, contracts, and technology investments.
CYBERSECURITY, RISK MANAGEMENT & BUSINESS CONTINUITY
• Lead cybersecurity and technology risk management, strengthening security controls, identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities, and ensuring effective incident prevention, detection, and response.
• Ensure organizational readiness and resilience through security policies, staff awareness, business continuity and disaster recovery planning, and regularly tested backup and recovery capabilities across critical systems and cloud services.
•Drive accountability for cybersecurity improvement, including independent security assessments, annual penetration testing, timely remediation of findings, and clear reporting of material risks and progress to leadership.
INFRASTRUCTURE, SYSTEMS & TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS
• Ensure reliable, secure, and effective technology infrastructure, including new fiber installations, across the organization's remote workforce, 13 summer camps, and two office locations, including networks, connectivity, telecommunications, devices, and cloud services.
•Oversee the performance, security, and lifecycle of enterprise technology systems, including Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra, Intune, SQL Server, and related applications, equipment, software, and licensing.
• Lead infrastructure projects and complex technical problem-solving, ensuring technology solutions are well designed, implemented, maintained, and improved with minimal disruption to organizational operations.
HELP DESK & EMPLOYEE TECHNOLOGY EXPERIENCE
• Ensure high-quality, responsive IT support that enables more than 300 end users across a largely remote workforce to work effectively and confidently.
• Establish clear service standards and accountability, using response and resolution times, first-call resolution, recurring issues, and employee feedback to evaluate performance and improve service quality.
• Improve employee technology experience by addressing recurring challenges, simplifying processes, and implementing proactive solutions that reduce disruptions and improve productivity.
TEAM LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT
•Lead and develop a team of four IT professionals, establishing clear priorities, expectations, accountability, and a shared commitment to service excellence.
•Build team capability and effectiveness through coaching, feedback, professional development, and a culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous learning.
•Balance operational and strategic priorities, ensuring the team has the capacity, expertise, and support to deliver reliable daily services while advancing longer-term improvements.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL PARTNERSHIP & COMMUNICATION
•Serve as a trusted technology partner to leaders and teams across the organization, understanding their needs, anticipating challenges, and developing practical solutions that support programs and operations.
•Support informed decision-making by translating technical issues, risks, and options into clear recommendations for nontechnical stakeholders.
•Ensure effective communication and coordination around technology priorities, changes, projects, and incidents, working closely with system owners and organizational leaders.
