Position Summary

HSOSC is seeking an experienced, organized, collaborative leader and manager to act as HSOSC’s executive director and to provide operational, financial, and administrative leadership as outlined in the Key Areas of Responsibility below.

The Executive Director is responsible for the effective management of HSOSC’s building and broader campus; oversight of core operational and administrative functions; management of staff, vendors, and contractors; and implementation of policies and strategic priorities established by synagogue leadership.

As a core member of the leadership team, The Executive Director serves as the Chief Operating Officer, and per the by-laws, reports to the President of the Congregation. The Executive Director collaborates and works in close partnership with the Executive Committee, Senior Rabbi, Cantor, staff, and lay leaders.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Staff Leadership and Human Resources: The Executive Director, as a close professional partner of the Senior Rabbi, supervises, manages, motivates, directs and mentors the HSOSC Staff. The responsibilities include:

Personnel administration including benefits, compensation, and performance reviews.
Creating a healthy, collaborative, accountable, and cooperative team culture.
Providing support and training for staff, as necessary.
Delegating effectively while providing guidance and hands on assistance as needed.
Ensuring staff are equipped to manage effectively both day-to-day responsibilities and unexpected challenges.
Hiring, supervision, evaluation and development of staff (Learning Ladder Staff are administered by the Director of Early Childhood and Youth Education).
Administering HR policies.

Facility Management: The Executive Director supervises the operation and maintenance of the facilities and the coordination with the school tenant and any successor tenant. The responsibilities include:

Managing the ongoing preventive maintenance of HSOSC’s facilities and ensuring appropriate oversight of building systems, repairs, and maintenance expenditures.
Partnering with our Security company and community partners to coordinate security protocols.

Selecting, supervising, and evaluating vendors, contractors, and outsourced service providers with attention to costeffectiveness, quality, and longterm value.
Coordinating capital improvement projects and the development and implementation of a longer-term strategic building plan in collaboration with a Congregational committee.
Supervising, together with a Facility Manager, food service, catering options, and the use of the facilities by tenants and other users.

Financial Management: The Executive Director provides oversight of the congregation’s financial operations in partnership with the Bookkeeper, Treasurer, Finance Committee, and an outsourced accounting team. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the financial matters of HSOSC. The responsibilities include:

Overseeing the congregation’s financial operations to ensure accurate financial records, timely reporting, appropriate internal controls, and responsible stewardship of congregational resources.
Monitoring revenues, expenses, cash flow and budget performance, and identifying financial risks, operational issues, and opportunities for improvement.
Supporting the timely collection of membership dues, religious school tuition, and other revenue sources.
Working collaboratively with the Treasurer to develop, administer, and monitor the annual budget.
Identifying grant opportunities, coordinating grant applications, and overseeing management of grants.
Supporting fund raising activities in collaboration with other staff and lay leaders.

Membership Engagement and Development: The Executive Director is responsible for creating a positive experience for current and prospective members and supporting HSOSC’s goals of creating, growing, and maintaining a welcoming, engaged, and caring community. The Executive Director works closely with clergy, staff, and lay leaders to strength member relations, ensure effective communication, support membership growth, and advance congregational development efforts. The responsibilities include:

Overseeing membership administration, including membership intake, maintaining accurate records, managing membership dues and special arrangements, and administering membership concessions in accordance with Congregational policies.
Building and maintaining welcoming, respectful, and positive relationships with current and prospective members.
Encouraging and assisting prospective members through engagement and the membership process.
Building and maintaining respectful and positive relationships with current and prospective congregants.
Ensuring timely, thoughtful, and appropriate responses to member inquiries or requests from congregants are addressed either directly or through coordination with the appropriate staff member or Congregational leader.
Supporting initiatives that strengthen member engagement, connection, participation, and overall congregational experience.
Serving as an active member of the development leadership team in partnership with clergy and lay leaders, contributing to fundraising strategy, donor engagement, stewardship, and relationship building.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience:

5+ years of experience in managing a complex organizational structure.
Experience in managing, supervising, and developing a multi-disciplinary team.
Strong financial literacy and experience with budgeting, reporting, expense management, and operational controls.
Experience in financial oversight and budget management, preferably with non-profits.
Familiarity with Jewish holidays and Jewish communal life.
Understanding of evolving trends within Jewish communal life and the ability to honor and support diverse Jewish practices, traditions, and expressions.
A 4- year undergraduate degree is required, an advanced degree in business administration or a related area with equivalent experience is preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and video streaming and conferencing software.
