FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Black Studies Unit of the Humanities Department at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Black Studies. Applicants are expected to have a strong record of Afrocentric thought and practice. The successful candidate will perform the following tasks:
Teach various levels of Black Studies and interdisciplinary Humanities courses.
Develop new courses and plan extracurricular activities.
Engage in research and scholarly activities leading to professional growth.
Mentor and cultivate students to prepare them for senior college, professional degrees, and their intellectual journey in general.
Participate in the evaluation of institutional goals in the context of Middle States accreditation, and assist in assessing the progress of curricular goals, at the Department, Unit and individual course levels.
Participate in departmental and college assignments.
Perform other tasks normally associated with the responsibilities of a full-time faculty appointment.
This is a tenure-track position and is on-campus/ in-person.
The mission of the Black Studies Unit at Hostos Community College is comprised of five interlocking objectives. First, to teach the Black experience, spanning the African continent and the African diaspora, particularly in the Americas; second, to create an edifice of knowledge that generates mental, spiritual, and political emancipation from oppression; third, to cultivate conscious scholars dedicated to community service, activism, and the application of emancipatory knowledge to liberate the Black community; fourth, to expand campus and community relationships; and fifth, to sustain the position of Black Studies in the academy as a serious discipline essential to a quality education.
As a discipline, Black Studies insists on African centeredness, African agency and an African frame of reference in research methodology, pedagogy, and intellectual production.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degree in Black Studies or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Candidates will be evaluated on their demonstrated record of Afrocentric thought and practice, regardless of disciplinary background.
The successful applicant will be a scholar with demonstrated original research, pedagogical innovation, and professional community impact through specific contributions, as well as an ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
The following qualifications are preferred:
• Experience teaching in Black Studies or a related area.
• Ability to teach and develop curriculum, as well as co-curricular activities.
• Demonstrated success teaching and mentoring students in an urban public higher-education setting, particularly multilingual, first-generation, and culturally diverse student populations.
• Familiarity with CUNY students and the educational mission of an urban public university is particularly valued.
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with related scholarly areas such as, but not limited to, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Film Studies, History, Art History, and / or Digital Humanities.
• Availability to teach evening and weekend courses.
