Position Summary: The New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is committed to the highest standards of nutrition while offering fresh, appetizing, and delicious food to all New York City students. Part of this process is ensuring that food service staff have the most support and training regarding cleaning and preparation of food within the kitchen and surrounding areas.
As part of this effort, the Supervisor of Exterminators will work closely with staff and management in the rollout of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and procedures. The Supervisor of Exterminators will be engaged in the prevention, control, and elimination of insects, vermin, and other pests in all areas of school buildings. In addition to this being done routinely, the Supervisor will train food services staff in the prevention of pests and rodents in individual kitchen and schools citywide as well as assess performance and training through reporting. Performs related work.
Reports to: Director, Field and Equipment Services
Direct Reports: Exterminators
Key Relationships: Relationships will be fostered with OFNS staff as well as with the greater NYCPS community.
Responsibilities
Supervises subordinate staff in the remediation of issues and the steps regarding Integrated Pest Management. Performs exterminating duties.
Conducts investigations and prepares studies on new procedures and methods operation in the field of pest control/extermination and prepares recommendations for improvements.
Assists in the formulation of policies and procedures related to progressive IPM. Assists in establishing organizational goals regarding the implementation of procedures to improve schools.
Prepares progress reports on subordinate staff work and coordinates work assignments.
Assists in personnel planning, assessing the workload of individual exterminators and recommending changes that would ease the IPM process.
Trains newly assigned personnel and seasoned food services staff in the details of Integrated Pest Management.
Orders supplies as required to maintain demand for services
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
A valid certificate as a Certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator for Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Rodent Control (7A) issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Plus
Upon promotion, registration with vendor(s) for purposes of purchasing supplies. The candidate must maintain appropriate credentials to maintain the registration and manage the 7A license.
License Requirement
For appointment to certain positions, at the time of appointment candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
SPECIAL NOTE
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, two years of full-time satisfactory practical experience in the preparation and use of insecticides, rodenticides, baits, traps, and related chemicals/equipment for the extermination of insects, vermin and other pests, and one year of full time satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity, for a total of three years of experience.
Preferred
Experience with IPM services in a school setting.
Familiarity with New York State Education pesticide law and NYC Local Law 37.
A valid commercial pesticide 7F license.
