Job description
The New York Times is looking for a motivated, collaborative, creative, analytical, and user-centric product marketer to help deepen audience engagement with our News product, with a particular focus on community and sharing features in the core Times app.
Reporting to the Director of Product Marketing, News, you will be embedded within the Community News Product team as the dedicated product marketing lead. You will partner closely with product, design, and newsroom stakeholders to leverage our community and sharing experiences to drive daily habit and new audience growth.
Your core focus will be the Community News Product team, with opportunities to support other editorially driven News product teams as priorities require. You will combine strategic leadership with hands-on execution: helping shape the product roadmap, developing go-to-market strategies, leading cross-functional launches, and creating lifecycle marketing programs that help our readers feel connected to our journalism, our newsroom, and each other.
This role is a hybrid position, where you'll be in the office three times per week in our NYC Headquarters.
Responsibilities:
Act as the embedded product marketing lead for the Community News Product team, partnering with product, design, and newsroom stakeholders to define the role of commenting, community features, and sharing in the News product experience.
Partner with editors, reporters, and newsroom leadership to increase journalist participation in comments and community spaces, ensuring those interactions align with editorial values while deepening trust and engagement among readers.
Validate unique market and audience opportunities within News community and sharing experiences by gathering insight into reader and reporter perspectives, creating audience segmentation frameworks and personas that build empathy for how people participate in and benefit from community features and C2C sharing.
Craft positioning and messaging and develop go-to-market strategies for evolving community and sharing features, such as commenting improvements, reporter-led interactions, and sharing prompts. Use market and customer insights to design campaigns and in-product programs that increase engagement, repeat visits, and new audience growth.
Create and increase habitual product usage and retention by monitoring KPIs, conducting message tests and experiments, and supplementing quantitative data with qualitative feedback from readers and newsroom partners.
Collaborate with other News product teams. Lead and influence cross-functional teams without formal authority, helping stakeholders align on shared goals and balance growth, user experience, and editorial integrity.
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
You will report to the Director of Product Marketing, News.
Basic Qualifications:
4+ years of related experience in marketing, product marketing, or product management, including at least 2 years of insights-driven go-to-market experience.
Experience with the product development lifecycle and operating within product-led teams; experience driving successful go-to-market strategies for product and feature launches, aligning product marketing and messaging to a larger brand narrative, and translating brand strategy into product marketing output.
Experience working in newsroom or editorial environments, driving audience and engagement with journalism or community features.
Demonstrated experience partnering with editorial or audience teams to design and promote community or social experiences (comments, reactions, forums) that deepen engagement.
Lead teams without formal authority, collaborating across product, newsroom, marketing, and data disciplines to achieve shared outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Digital subscription, content, newsletter, or mobile app experience.
Experience with referral programs, C2C community management, or two-sided marketplaces.
Distill essential insights from research and create clear and thoughtful market requirement documents and creative briefs.
Balance creative, conceptual thinking with data-driven projects; excel in creative and analytical environments; identify and assess success metrics.
Capacity for, and interest in, flexing across both planning and execution, shifting between strategic direction-setting and hands-on go-to-market work as needed.
Demonstrated collaboration with different disciplines; build trust and relationships quickly, with empathy for customers and expertise in understanding user experience.
Experience working on products where brand and editorial integrity are competitive advantages, maintaining trust while experimenting with new community formats and engagement tactics.
