Job description
Sport Manager, Athletics Road Events
Role Purpose
As Sport Manager, Athletics Road Events, you are LA28's stakeholder manager to World Athletics, World Para Athletics, and USA Track and Field for the marathon and race walk program. You develop the sport workforce plan with the local athletics community, validate equipment requirements, and work with the federations on competition and training schedules. You contribute sport-specific expertise to organizational planning and connect timing, scoring, and results to competition requirements. It suits an operator establishing a road event program from the ground up.
Key Responsibilities
Act as stakeholder manager to World Athletics, World Para Athletics, and USA Track and Field for road events.
Shape sport workforce strategy and planning with the local sport community, identifying staff, officials, and skilled volunteers.
Validate sport equipment requirements and develop competition and training schedules with the international federations.
Provide sport-specific input to pre-Games, testing, and Games-time planning, including Sport Delivery Plans and venue planning.
Coordinate with Timing, Scoring and Results so federation requirements reach competition systems and infrastructure.
Required Competencies
5+ years of experience delivering national and international road events in a leadership role, focused on marathon and race walk.
Extensive knowledge of road events and event operations across professional leagues, federations, universities, and grassroots.
Understanding of road events at national and international level, and of coordination with United States governing bodies.
Extremely detail-oriented, a self-starter, and fluent working with Office suite products including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
Proven ability to build relationships internally and externally, balancing assertiveness with diplomacy, and to manage change effectively.
Valued Experience
Direct Olympic or Paralympic experience at a previous organizing committee.
Experience collaborating on venue design, event planning, and delivery.
Strong communication, team-building, and interpersonal skills.
A collaborative mindset that prioritizes the team without ego.
An innovative viewpoint that challenges the established status quo.
What We Offer
The opportunity to deliver marathon and race walk at the Olympic Games.
A collaborative, inclusive team guided by optimism, integrity, excellence, and boldness.
Meaningful ownership of a road event program established from the ground up.
Work with lasting, visible impact on Los Angeles and the legacy of the Games.
What This Role Means for the Games
Road events run through the streets of Los Angeles, watched by the whole city rather than a single venue. Your federation relationships, workforce planning, and schedule work make those competitions credible for athletes and memorable for the community along the course.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Available to work onsite in our Downtown Los Angeles-based office.
The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.
The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment.
Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.
Perform other duties as required; the role will evolve over time and may include operational responsibilities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
International travel of one to two trips a year, up to two weeks each, requires a valid passport.
Domestic and local venue travel, increasing in frequency as 2028 approaches.
Compensation
The annual base salary range for this position is $88,000.00 - $108,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
Accommodation
LA28 is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment process. If you require an accommodation at any stage, please let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs.
Equal Opportunity
LA28 does not provide relocation assistance.
