Mentor Teaching Artist

Job Description:

The Arts for Learning After-School Enrichment Mentor Teaching Artist is responsible for mentoring emerging artists, planning engaging arts exploration workshops for students, and ensuring the safety of all students before, during, and after the program.

The After-School Enrichment mentor teaching artist has the following specific responsibilities:

Mentor a group of emerging artists by exemplifying best teaching artist practices by way of:

Working alongside emerging artists to yield engaging arts explorations for students.

Modeling best practices through enrichment lessons with students.

Providing real-time guidance during arts exploration time.

Lead a group of students in daily arts explorations workshops.

Establish a positive and productive after school climate for all students.

Build relationships with students, staff, and parents to create a positive, supportive community within the classroom and site.

Attend all professional development and planning meetings as instructed by Arts for Learning.

Collaborate with and provide support for various partners and external stakeholders.

Collaborate with Classroom and Site Leads to ensure a safe and effective program for students.

Follow and uphold all site health and safety procedures.

Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A passion for mentorship, coaching and talent development.

Strong communication skills, with an ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly.

An ability to effectively provide feedback.

Demonstrable expertise in an art form, and ability to present artistic samples.

A willingness to be flexible in service to the After-School Enrichment program, organized by Arts For Learning Maryland.

A passion for students and the ability to build meaningful relationships, and a desire to “go above and beyond” to ensure each student’s success.

A strong interest (with experience preferred) in arts integration, exploration, and enrichment.

A willingness to use either the school office landline or their personal cell phone (number blocking is acceptable) to contact parents regularly.

An ability to attend and engage in all required training and program dates. PD Dates TBA.

An ability to create inclusive environments where all students’ unique gifts and talents are discovered and cultivated, and where students’ identities (racial, cultural, social, gender, etc.) are acknowledged, affirmed, and reflected around them.

An ability to examine biases and understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and their impact on policies and practices, especially related to the administration of public education.

A commitment to seeing families as partners in education and communicating with them regularly.

A strong desire to fully integrate into a non-traditional learning environment where flexibility is strongly valued, and new and innovative ideas are cultivated and expected from all staff.

Please note that staff working in the After-School Enrichment program will need to be able to stand, walk, and be active throughout the program day. They must be able to keep up with and supervise students within and outside the classroom. Staff will also need to be able to lift up to 20 lbs on occasion when setting up and breaking down the classroom and/or preparing for performances and other events. Bending, kneeling, and climbing stairs are also frequently needed during these programs.

Required Dates, Times, and Working Hours:

After-School Arts Enrichment Mentor Teaching Artists must be able to commit to attending the program and training days listed below. Dates are tentative and may be subject to change:

Arts for Learning After-School Enrichment Program Dates: The program will run Monday through Friday, following the Baltimore City Schools calendar, from Sept 8, 2026, to June 3, 2027, from 2:30pm - 5:00pm for students, with Mentor Teaching Artists engaging in 30 minutes of planning time from 5:00pm - 5:30pm each program day.

Mentor Teaching Artist time commitment: 3 hours per day

Compensation:

The After-School Enrichment mentor teaching artist position is temporary, non-exempt, and not eligible for employee benefits. However, it is eligible for time off in the form of accrued Sick and Safe leave.

Mentor Teaching Artists will be paid an hourly rate of $40

Time Off:

Grant and special-funded staff, hired for short-term assignments, internships, and as temporary project-based staff, are not eligible to accrue PTO, however Sick and Safe leave is available to these employees. Sick and Safe Leave is accrued at a rate of one hour for every thirty hours worked and begins accruing on day one of employment. Employees may use the leave in increments of 1 hour or greater. Employees will be paid at their current regular rate for each accrued Sick and Safe Leave hour used.
