Job description
A large, diversified organization is seeking a Director of IT Finance to lead enterprise technology asset governance, financial management, software licensing, and data-quality initiatives.
This role sits at the intersection of Technology and Finance and is responsible for bringing greater structure, transparency, and financial discipline to the organization's hardware and software asset landscape. The Director will oversee the governance and integrity of asset data used for cost reporting, budgeting, compliance, licensing, and executive decision-making.
This is not a traditional IT asset administration position. The ideal candidate has built a career in IT financial management, Technology Business Management, FP&A, or digital finance and understands how technology is financed, sourced, measured, and governed.
The Director will partner closely with Infrastructure, Security, Procurement, Technology Sourcing, FP&A, and business-unit leaders. Success will require strong financial judgment, data-governance expertise, executive communication skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders across a complex organization without relying on direct authority. The role will also help evaluate the current technology asset-management platform and identify opportunities to modernize manual processes through AI and automation.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Asset Governance and Data Quality
Own end-to-end governance of the enterprise hardware and software asset system of record.
Establish and enforce standards for asset ownership, data quality, documentation, and audit trails throughout the asset lifecycle.
Improve the accuracy and integrity of asset data across procurement, billing, CMDB, and IT financial-management platforms.
Identify and resolve discrepancies between source systems while reducing manual reconciliation.
Lead cross-functional governance forums and convert operational feedback into clear, enforceable standards.
Hold asset owners accountable for maintaining accurate data while building collaborative working relationships.
Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external audits involving technology assets, software licensing, and compliance.
IT Financial Management and Cost Optimization
Apply financial discipline to technology assets, licensing agreements, renewals, and platform investments.
Analyze hardware and software utilization data to identify cost-recovery, deprovisioning, consolidation, and right-sizing opportunities.
Develop total-cost-of-ownership analyses and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
Partner with FP&A to align technology costs, general-ledger reporting, forecasts, and budget assumptions.
Deliver clear spend, risk, utilization, and optimization insights to senior technology and finance leaders.
Support enterprise cost-allocation, chargeback, and Technology Business Management reporting processes.
Software Licensing and Contract Management
Oversee software license management, reconciliation, true-ups, and optimization for major enterprise vendors.
Partner with Procurement and Technology Sourcing on contract negotiations, renewals, pricing structures, and commercial terms.
Evaluate current and future licensing requirements based on utilization, workforce needs, and business growth.
Identify opportunities to reduce unused licenses, eliminate duplicate products, and improve enterprise purchasing decisions.
Ensure licensing positions and supporting documentation are accurate and audit-ready.
Contribute financial and operational analysis to strategic vendor negotiations.
Platform Strategy and Replatforming
Own the strategic direction of the enterprise IT and software asset-management platform.
Assess current platform limitations, integration gaps, reporting capabilities, and long-term business requirements.
Lead proof-of-concept evaluations of alternative or complementary platforms.
Develop business cases and recommendations for platform modernization or reimplementation.
Ensure the asset-management environment integrates effectively with procurement, billing, CMDB, and IT financial-management systems.
Lead platform implementations, upgrades, and optimization initiatives from requirements gathering through delivery.
Coordinate internal stakeholders and external vendors throughout platform-selection and implementation efforts.
Cross-Functional Leadership
Serve as a key partner to Infrastructure, Security, Application, Finance, Procurement, and business-unit stakeholders.
Build consensus around competing priorities, data standards, financial requirements, and governance expectations.
Establish recurring reporting and governance cadences with business units to validate usage, forecast costs, and identify risk.
Bring structure, ownership, and accountability to historically fragmented processes.
Translate complex financial, licensing, and technology information for both technical and executive audiences.
Present recommendations and decision-ready insights to senior leadership.
AI and Automation Enablement
Champion the use of AI and automation to modernize manual technology asset and licensing processes.
Identify opportunities for automated reconciliation, deprovisioning, reporting, provisioning, and self-service workflows.
Partner with Technology Business Management and enterprise technology teams to pilot new AI-enabled use cases.
Evaluate emerging automation capabilities within the IT asset-management and software asset-management market.
Build practical business cases for automation investments based on efficiency, accuracy, cost reduction, and risk mitigation.
Drive adoption of scalable, data-driven processes that reduce dependency on manual work.
Team Leadership
Lead a team of hardware and software asset-management professionals and oversee managed-service relationships.
Evolve the team from primarily transactional asset administration toward data-driven financial and governance work.
Set clear priorities, performance expectations, and accountability standards.
Support employee development, role evolution, and succession planning.
Partner with peer leaders across Technology Sourcing, Procurement, FP&A, and Technology Business Management.
Manage external service providers and ensure work quality, performance, and contractual commitments are met.
