Position Summary

The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative and operational leader of the synagogue, partnering closely with the Rabbi, staff, lay leadership, and congregants to advance the synagogue’s mission. The Executive Director oversees day-to-day operations: facilities, human resources, communications, and strategic initiatives and works with lay leaders supporting finance, membership engagement and development, for a congregation of approximately 250 member families. The successful candidate will lead by example, combining strong organizational and planning skills with a service-oriented approach and a willingness to roll up their sleeves to support the daily operations of the synagogue. This position requires a collaborative leader who combines strong organizational management skills with a commitment to fostering a warm, engaged and flourishing Jewish community.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership
Partner with clergy and lay leadership to implement the synagogue’s mission and strategic goals.
Serve as a key advisor to the Board of Trustees and its committees.
Ensure effective communication and collaboration among clergy, staff, volunteers, and congregants.
Support a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and community engagement.

Financial Management
Develop and manage the synagogue’s annual operating budget in collaboration with functional stakeholders, as well as the Treasurer and Finance Committee.
Working with the Treasurer, monitors financial performance, including performance against budget, and is responsible for top- and bottom-line budget adherence. Provides regular reports to leadership.
Coordinates with Bookkeeper to ensure bills are paid timely (Accounts Payable), all receipts are processed (Accounts Receivable), and payroll is executed on schedule.

Membership & Programming

Work with lay leadership to support membership recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies, strengthening congregational participation.
Foster welcoming experiences for new and prospective members.
Support lifecycle events, holiday programming, educational initiatives, and community activities.

Advancement
Work with lay leadership to oversee development activities (annual campaign, endowment and any new initiatives)
Coordinate timing and execution of development messages with lay leadership and staff
Oversee donor stewardship in coordination with volunteers and staff
Work with staff and volunteers to identify, oversee and coordinate grants
Human Resources & Staff Supervision
Supervise administrative and operational staff, including hiring, onboarding, evaluation, and professional development.
Ensure compliance with employment laws and organizational policies.
Cultivate a positive workplace culture grounded in respect and collaboration.
Operations & Facilities Management
Oversee synagogue facilities, maintenance, safety, and security.
Manage communications to members.
Manage vendor relationships, contracts, insurance, and risk management.
Ensure smooth operation of building use, rentals, and scheduling.
Develop and implement emergency preparedness and security protocols.
Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to step in wherever needed, recognizing that in a small congregation, every member of the team contributes to the community's success.
Exercise sound judgment in determining when to delegate responsibilities and when to provide direct assistance to ensure high standards of service, hospitality, and stewardship.
Governance & Administration
Participate in Board meetings, maintain organizational policies, records, and legal compliance.
Ensure effective use of technology, databases, and communications systems.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or demonstrated experience in nonprofit management, business administration, Jewish communal service, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of leadership or management experience in nonprofit, educational, religious, or community organizations.
Demonstrated experience in operational management of $500k to $1M organizations. Hands on experience with budgeting, financial management, and organizational operations.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills, supervisory and team leadership skills, and problem solving skills.
Knowledge of ShulCloud or other customer relationship management (CRM) programs.
Experience working with boards, volunteers, and diverse stakeholders.
Familiarity with Jewish communal life and synagogue operations preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range is $80,000 to $95,000, inclusive of a health insurance stipend and commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid time off, professional development opportunities and complimentary synagogue membership.
