Job description

Senior Accounting Advisor | Five Towns, NY · $140,000–$160,000

About the Role
We're looking for a seasoned accounting leader to step into a dual leadership role: managing our Accounts Payable function while mentoring and developing our Account Leads. This is a high-impact position for someone who thrives at the intersection of operational management, coaching, and hands-on financial oversight. You'll be a leader of leaders — modeling excellence on your own accounts while helping others grow into confident, independent owners of their client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, manage, and hold Account Leads accountable through structured check-ins, systems-based training, and targeted development
  • Mentor Leads in financial reviews, client reporting, and workflow management, helping them grow into confident, autonomous owners of their engagements
  • Calibrate your level of involvement as Leads develop — stepping in when needed, stepping back to promote ownership
  • Monitor performance signals and provide constructive, timely feedback

AP & Accounting Management

  • Oversee day-to-day AP operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to firm standards
  • Oversee the accuracy and integrity of client bookkeeping and accounting, including AR, general ledger activity, and bank reconciliations
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities; prepare and review financial statements and reports
  • Implement and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their accounting needs and deliver tailored solutions

Capacity & Operations

  • Maintain visibility into workloads across Leads and their teams; identify and address imbalances proactively
  • Coach Leads on strategic delegation and efficient use of offshore support
  • Drive adoption of company platforms, processes, and technology across your team
  • Ensure client onboarding is seamless, professional, and consistent with company standards
  • Foster collaboration across Leads, Advisors, and offshore staff — escalating only when necessary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership or managerial role
  • Demonstrated experience managing AP functions and overseeing accounting teams
  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks or similar)
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Proven ability to mentor staff, delegate effectively, and develop talent
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; adept at building and maintaining client and internal relationships
  • Experience in an outsourced accounting firm or similar environment highly desirable
