Job description

Key Responsibilities
Build and maintain features across our full stack (Ruby on Rails, React, Flutter), taking end-to-end ownership from initial design through production.
Act as a product-minded partner, translating complex user needs—often in early or ambiguous stages—into intuitive, technically sound solutions.
Operate with high autonomy, driving architectural decisions and navigating ambiguity to solve impactful engineering challenges.
Elevate our engineering culture by setting high standards, mentoring teammates, and simplifying processes to help the team move faster as we scale.
Proactively balance feature velocity with long-term system health by identifying and addressing technical debt before it becomes a bottleneck.
Prioritize pragmatic simplicity, ensuring we build only what is necessary to validate assumptions and deliver value, while resisting complexity that hinders agility.
Ensure the reliability and performance of our critical systems by taking ownership of production issues and implementing sustainable fixes.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
Requirements
Seniority & Ownership: 5+ years of software engineering experience with a proven track record of owning features from conception to production deployment.
Product-First Mindset: You treat code as a tool to solve user problems. You are comfortable questioning requirements, identifying gaps in user stories, and advocating for the best technical solution.
Backend Expertise: Deep proficiency in Ruby on Rails; you understand the framework’s nuances and know how to build, maintain, and scale robust backend systems.
Technical Rigor: Deep understanding of relational database design, query optimization, and architectural trade-offs. You prioritize maintainability and security (e.g., HIPAA/SOC 2 compliance) in every decision.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. In a remote-first team, your ability to document decisions and communicate asynchronously is as critical as your coding skills.
Adaptability: Experience working in fast-paced startup environments where requirements evolve and ambiguity is the norm.

Nice to Have
Mission-Critical Systems: Prior experience building software where reliability is paramount (e.g., healthcare, fintech, or life-safety applications).
Full-Stack Depth: Direct experience with our frontend stack (React, Flutter).
Cloud Infrastructure: Hands-on experience with AWS (ECS, RDS, S3) and modern DevOps practices that allow small teams to move fast.
Physical/Digital Intersection: Experience working with hardware-connected software (IoT) or building applications that handle intermittent/offline connectivity.

What Success Looks Like
First 30 Days: You have immersed yourself in our product and codebase, established strong working relationships across the team, and shipped your first impactful feature to production.
First 60 Days: You are independently leading feature work, actively collaborating on product requirements to ensure we’re building the right solutions, and identifying high-leverage opportunities to pay down technical debt or improve system reliability.
First 90 Days: You have become a force multiplier for the team. You are operating with full autonomy, championing technical standards, proactively surfacing risks before they manifest, and helping elevate our engineering culture through mentorship and best practices.
