Job description
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Director of Operations to take ownership of how the synagogue runs day to day, facilities, staff, finances, technology, and systems.
This is a role for someone who is energized by making things work: closing the gap between a good idea and a well-executed event, replacing an ad hoc process with a reliable one, and being the person others trust to have already thought about the details. You will work alongside clergy, the Board, committees, staff, and a large and engaged volunteer corps.
What You'll Do
Operations and systems
Lead the synagogue's daily operations, administrative functions, and office staff.
Build and document systems and workflows that improve efficiency, communication, and Coordinate operational support for worship services, holidays, lifecycle events, programs, facility rentals, and Board activities.
People
Supervise designated operational staff (excluding clergy and education staff), including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management.
Serve as a trusted operational partner to clergy, lay leadership, committees, and volunteers.
Facilities and safety
Oversee the building: maintenance, vendors, capital projects, and sustainability initiatives.
Manage security, emergency preparedness, and regulatory compliance in coordination with relevant partners and agencies.
Finance and administration
Partner with the Vice President of Finance and the Budget Committee on budgeting, purchasing, contracts, and financial reporting.
Negotiate and manage vendor relationships and service agreements.
Technology
Oversee synagogue technology, audiovisual systems, and IT vendors, including livestream support for services.
Supervise the staff or contractor responsible for the synagogue's digital communications and social media.
What We're Looking For
Required
7+ years of operations, facilities, or nonprofit management experience, including direct supervision of staff
Demonstrated success managing budgets, vendors, and physical space
Strong project management skills—you can run several things at once without dropping any of them
Excellent organizational and communication skills, and sound judgment with sensitive information
Comfort partnering with volunteers and lay leadership, where influence matters more than authority
Solid technology skills and genuine interest in improving organizational systems
Preferred
Experience in a synagogue, church, school, or other mission-driven nonprofit
Familiarity with Jewish life, the Jewish calendar, and synagogue operations
Experience with membership or CRM databases, facilities management software and AV systems
