Job description

Assistant Controller

Marine Park, Brooklyn, NY
$110,000 – $150,000 DOE
Full-Time | On-Site

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join the corporate finance team of an established multi-location retail organization.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Assistant Controller will play a key role across financial reporting, accounting oversight, and Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A). This individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the company’s financials while also supporting budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning across the organization.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical accounting skills with an analytical mindset and the ability to understand not only whether the numbers are accurate, but also what they mean for the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the company’s P&L, balance sheet, and financial reporting.
  • Review monthly financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness.
  • Identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and ensure necessary corrections are made before financials reach the CFO and ownership.
  • Support and drive FP&A activities, including budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and variance analysis.
  • Analyze actual performance against budgets and forecasts and identify key trends and variances.
  • Provide financial insights that help the CFO and ownership better understand business performance.
  • Work closely with the Accounting Manager and accounting staff to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with and provide oversight to an overseas accounting team and its Accounting Manager.
  • Partner with the data and analytics team on financial reporting, analysis, and performance insights.
  • Develop and improve accounting processes, procedures, reporting, and internal controls.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and consistency of the finance and accounting function.
  • Take ownership of accounting and finance projects and drive them through completion.
  • Provide the CFO with accurate, reliable, and decision-ready financial information.

Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for a technically strong accounting and finance professional who can bridge accounting and FP&A.

This person should be able to review a P&L or balance sheet, recognize when something doesn’t look right, investigate and correct the underlying issue, and then analyze the numbers to understand what they mean for the business.

The ideal candidate is analytical, highly accurate, process-oriented, and capable of independently taking a project or problem and running with it.

While previous management experience is a plus, technical accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analytical capabilities are more important than extensive people-management experience.

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting and financial reporting experience.
  • Deep understanding of P&L statements, balance sheets, reconciliations, and financial statements.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing financial statements and identifying and correcting discrepancies.
  • Hands-on budgeting and forecasting experience required.
  • Experience with FP&A, financial analysis, and variance analysis.
  • Strong understanding of accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to independently interpret financial results and identify trends, issues, and opportunities.
  • Ability to work independently, think critically, and take ownership of responsibilities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience is a plus.
  • Experience within a multi-location or operationally complex organization is a plus.
  • Public accounting candidates may be considered where their experience is relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated career stability and longevity in previous positions preferred.

Why Join

This is an opportunity to join an established organization with a strong emphasis on culture, stability, and work-life balance.

You’ll work directly with the CFO and have meaningful exposure to both the accounting and FP&A sides of the business, with the opportunity to take significant ownership of financial reporting, analysis, and planning across the organization.
