Job description

Abraham Joshua Heschel School is seeking a full time Middle School Assistant Judaic Studies Teacher for grades 6-8. The Assistant Judaic Studies Teacher will support the teaching and learning of Chumash, Torah She'be'al Peh and Ivrit, as well as daily Tefillah; and will play an active role in planning and executing special programming. The position is an excellent opportunity for someone to gain valuable professional training and experience in formal Jewish education.

In addition to having a Bachelor's Degree, applicants must have a Jewish education, strong Jewish text skills and oral Hebrew language skills. A candidate should enjoy the process of teamwork, which is how we work to address the needs of students, develop curriculum, and plan special programming. We are also committed to paying individual attention to students with a range of learning profiles.

Our Judaic Studies education is text based and values oriented. We balance formal and creative approaches and integrate the learning of text skills with themes of individual, Jewish communal and universal identity; Jewish beliefs and practices; Jewish history; and human nature. Applicants are expected to be passionate about Judaism and about fostering the connection between a diverse student body and our sacred texts and traditions.

Abraham Joshua Heschel School, located in New York City, is an independent, pluralistic Jewish Day School, N-12, unaffiliated with any single movement or synagogue, and our families have a range of backgrounds, practices and beliefs. The school’s approach to education is governed by a profound respect for children and a deep commitment to academic excellence. Teachers at Heschel nurture students’ curiosity, cultivate their imagination, encourage creative expression, value their initiative, and build their critical-thinking skills. The Heschel School is dedicated to inspiring its graduates to become responsible adults and active, compassionate citizens of the Jewish world and world communities. The Heschel School includes families from a wide range of Jewish backgrounds, practices, and beliefs.
