Position Summary
Supervises security operations for an assigned shift, facility, campus, or operational area to provide protection and security for hospital assets, employees, patients, and visitors. The Security Captain is responsible for frontline leadership, personnel management, investigations, training oversight, operational consistency, and collaboration with hospital departments to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Responsibilities
What you will do
Supervises Security Officers and/or Security Lieutenants assigned to an operational area or shift.
Maintains confidentiality and professional standards and provides excellent customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and hospital leaders.
Interprets policies, procedures, and departmental guidelines and communicates them verbally and in writing.
Manages emotional situations and individuals under extreme stress with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
Assists or leads (in absence of Manager) with emergency drills, incident command support, and coordinated response efforts during critical incidents.
Supervises training of new officers and ongoing development of current officers.
Ensures appropriate communication regarding patient, operational, and security-related needs to peers, subordinates, and hospital staff.
Conducts periodic and semi-annual performance reviews and provides coaching, performance counseling, and accountability measures as needed.
Investigates incidents, ensures report completion and quality, and coordinates appropriate operational follow-up.
Manages personnel functions including hiring, work assignments, scheduling support, coaching plans, employee development, and disciplinary actions.
Oversees daily operational performance, staffing coordination, and enforcement of departmental standards.
Supports implementation and review of policies, procedures, post orders, and security initiatives.
Promotes consistency in customer service, officer conduct, training compliance, and operational execution.
Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with organizational policy and applicable standards.
Maintains compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Participates in continual review of Security policies and procedures and recommends improvements.
Participates in monthly QA, QI, and related departmental service activities.
Works with patients, visitors, staff, department leaders, and other stakeholders to resolve issues and support departmental goals.
Serves as first step in the discipline process and supports fair, timely, and consistent accountability practices.
Performs administrative functions, including timekeeping or related support duties, as assigned.
Maintains strong working relationships with all departments to support organizational objectives and achieve results.
Participates in special projects, readiness initiatives, and operational improvement efforts as assigned.
Performs other related functions as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word or similar software for report writing purposes required.
Associate degree in criminal justice, security management, emergency management, homeland security, business, or related field preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security management, emergency management, homeland security, business, or related field preferred.
Training in leadership, investigations, employee relations, incident command, and operational management preferred.
Experience
Five (5) years of progressive security, law enforcement, military security, corrections, or related public safety experience required.
Two (2) years of supervisory or management experience required.
Healthcare security experience preferred.
Demonstrated experience in hiring, discipline, investigations, staff development, performance management, and operational leadership required.
Licenses/Certifications
Must obtain and maintain a State of Florida Class “D” Security Officer License.
Must obtain and maintain CPI Certification.
Must obtain and maintain IAHSS Basic Certification or higher.
IAHSS Supervisor Certification required within 12 months of promotion or appointment.
Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator - CHPA preferred.
FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 & IS-800 within 12 months of promotion or appointment.
