Position Summary

The Baal Koreh (Torah Reader) is responsible for accurately and proficiently chanting the weekly Torah and holiday readings according to the appropriate trope. The Baal Koreh plays an essential role in synagogue worship by ensuring that the Torah is read with precision, dignity, and reverence, helping to create a meaningful prayer experience for Chicago Loop Synagogue.

Primary Responsibilities

Prepare and chant the weekly Torah readings for Shabbat, holidays, fast days, and other occasions as scheduled with staff.
Read all Torah portions, as well as Maftir and special readings when required.
Read the full Parsha every week.
Practice sufficiently in advance of services to review the Torah scroll and prepare for the service.
Ensure all Torah readings are accurate with respect to pronunciation, cantillation, and halachic requirements.
Be available for additional readings when possible.
Maintain a professional, respectful, and collaborative relationship with staff, lay leaders, and congregants.

Qualifications

Demonstrated proficiency in reading Torah with correct trope and Hebrew pronunciation.
Strong familiarity with the annual Torah reading cycle and special holiday readings.
Knowledge of synagogue ritual and Torah reading customs.
Ability to prepare reading independently and perform confidently before a congregation.
Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience serving as a Baal Koreh in a synagogue setting.
Ability to read Haftarah or assist with other liturgical responsibilities.
