POSITION SUMMARY The Executive Director (ED) is the chief administrative and operating officer of B’nai Aviv and works in close partnership with the clergy, the President, Board of Directors and Department Directors to advance the mission of B’nai Aviv. The ED is responsible for the overall business, financial, and organizational health of the congregation, providing disciplined financial stewardship, sound operational management, and strong, values-driven leadership of staff.

This is a highly visible leadership role requiring an executive who can combine business acumen with genuine warmth, integrity, and a deep respect for Jewish communal life. The ED oversees the synagogue’s finances, (including but not limited to budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting), administrative operations, human resources, facilities, member communications, and technology management, while ensuring an exceptional experience for members, staff, and guests.

The ED serves as a consistent, reliable, and organized executive presence who translates the Board’s vision and policy into effective day to-day execution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Business & Financial Management

? Serve as the chief financial steward of the congregation; monitor and manage the annual operating budget in partnership with the Treasurer and Finance/Budget Committee.

? Oversee staff responsible for accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, dues billing and collections, and month-end/year-end financial reporting and reconciliations.

? Prepare accurate, timely financial reports for the Board and committees, and clearly present financial performance and risks.

? Negotiate, manage, and monitor vendor contracts, insurance policies, and service agreements to ensure fiscal responsibility and strong value.

? Take an active role in long-range financial planning, cash-flow management, reserve strategy, and support for capital projects and fundraising/development initiatives.

Organizational Leadership & Operations

? Direct the day-to-day administrative operations of the synagogue, ensuring efficient, well-documented systems for membership data, dues, scheduling, records, and reporting.

? Establish clear policies, procedures, and workflows that create organizational consistency, accountability, and operational excellence across all departments.

? Oversee technology and office systems (membership database, financial software, IT infrastructure) to maximize efficiency and data integrity.

? Oversee facilities and property management, including maintenance, capital improvements, security and usage scheduling.

People Leadership & Staff Management

? Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and supervise administrative, clerical, facilities, and other non-clergy staff; build a high-performing, service-oriented team.

? Set clear goals and expectations and conduct regular performance evaluations for staff.

? Maintain, update and implement personnel policies and employee handbook in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

? Model and cultivate a positive, respectful, and collaborative workplace culture grounded in open communication and accountability.

? Effectively resolve conflict and personnel matters with discretion, fairness, and sound judgment.

? Support and coordinate with clergy and program staff to ensure aligned, seamless delivery of member-facing services and events.

Member Engagement, Communications & Community Relations

? Serve as a warm, visible, and accessible presence for members, ensuring outstanding and responsive member and guest experiences.

? Oversee membership recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies in partnership with the Membership Committee.

? Partner on communications and marketing efforts with volunteer committees and Marketing Program Manager.

? Represent the congregation in accordance with B’nai Aviv principles.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

? Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.

? Minimum of 5-7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a business, nonprofit, or communal organization, with demonstrated success managing budgets, staff, and complex operations.

? Proven track record of financial management, including budgeting, reporting, forecasting, and internal controls.

? Demonstrated experience supervising and developing staff teams in a multi-functional environment.

? Experience in a synagogue or other nonprofit organization strongly preferred; familiarity with congregational database systems (e.g., Chaverware, ShulCloud) a plus.

? Proficiency with financial, membership, and office software systems (e.g., QuickBooks, Microsoft Office/Excel).
