Job description

The Community Synagogue is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and service-focused Full Charge Bookkeeper to join its Accounting Department. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Full Charge Bookkeeper is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the congregation by maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and assisting with financial reporting.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional who works independently, manages multiple priorities, meets established deadlines, and demonstrates exceptional accuracy and integrity. Because this position regularly interacts with congregants, clergy, staff, and vendors, excellent customer service and communication skills are essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Process and maintain accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
Record and reconcile general ledger activity.
Prepare journal entries and maintain accurate accounting records.
Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements, and other balance sheet accounts.
Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
Prepare financial reports and supporting schedules as requested by the Controller.
Process member payments, donations, tuition, and other receipts accurately.
Maintain vendor files and process payments in accordance with established procedures.
Assist with annual audit preparation by gathering supporting documentation and responding to auditor requests.
Ensure compliance with organizational accounting policies and internal controls.
Maintain confidentiality of all financial and member information.
Respond professionally and courteously to inquiries from congregants, vendors, and staff.
Perform additional accounting and administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible bookkeeping or accounting experience, preferably as a Full Charge Bookkeeper.
Experience with nonprofit accounting is preferred; synagogue or religious institution experience is a plus.
Strong working knowledge of:
QuickBooks Desktop (required)
Microsoft Excel (required)
Microsoft Office Suite
Experience with ShulCloud or similar membership/database software is preferred.
Strong understanding of general accounting principles and bookkeeping practices.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
